About "The Kullaberg pilot light"

by Gerry van Roosmalen

About the artwork

During an enchanting sunset on Kullaberg, in southwest Sweden, the sun sends its last rays towards the lighthouse. It seems as if she touches the tower, turning it into a pilot light that watches over the landscape - until the sun rises again on the other side of the world.

The day began cold and windy, with an almost impenetrable cloud cover that the sun managed to poke through from time to time. A cloud cover that gave the landscape an almost shadowless, high-contrast view. For a travel photographer, this often means a disruption in the creative process.

When inspiration fails me, the camera disappears into the backpack to prevent me from taking too many "snapshots". I sit for a moment, feel the wind through my hair, take in the smell of the landscape, and close my eyes for a moment. Then I look again and try not to think in circles, because asking "where have my inspiration and creativity gone?" often only leads to a vicious circle. A circle that distracts me even further from the processes needed for an engaging photograph.

The day started with watery sunshine, but set the sky ablaze at sunset.
