About "The 'Karen' Archetype in Internet Culture: Gender Stereotypes and Social Perception"

by Elianne van Turennout

About the artwork

Karen, an internet culture character, is often described as a white woman, usually middle-aged, who turns small inconveniences into the biggest world problems and takes action on them. This archetype is widespread in memes, social media and popular culture, and is often used to highlight a particular behaviour that is considered irritating or excessive.

Anyone who has ever stood in a shop or worked in a customer service department knows that this archetype exists. What is striking is that although this stereotype is common, there seems to be no official male variant. This raises questions about gender stereotypes and how they are constructed and disseminated in society. Indeed, there are men who behave similarly to the traditional 'Karen', but there does not seem to be a specific term for them. This lack of a counterpart for male behaviours similar to those of Karen possibly illustrates a broader issue regarding gender dynamics and social perception.

It is interesting to explore why certain stereotypes become so prominent in society, while others receive less attention. Perhaps it is time to rethink how we understand and approach gender stereotypes, and to have a more inclusive and nuanced discussion about the diversity of human behaviour and identity.
