Daibutsu is a Japanese word that literally means Great Buddha and refers to large images of the Buddha or one of his various reincarnations. In the West, the word is used to refer to the Great Buddha of Kamakura who became known through Rudyard Kipling's poem "The Buddha in Kamakura.
The Great Buddha of Kamakura is one of the icons of Japan and a tourist attraction. The bronze statue is 13.35 meters high and consists of several individually cast and artfully assembled parts. Amida is depicted in a seated meditation posture. His hands rest in his lap (Dhyana-Mudra), with both index fingers raised in a special shape and by contact with the thumbs form two triangles.

Erich Kips was active as a figure painter at the beginning of his career. As a genre painter he also made many allegorical representations and later devoted himself intensively to landscape painting and cityscapes, especially harbour and marine subjects.
