About the artwork

Archaic sculptures on the top of the heap

The totems by Basque painter and sculptor Agustín Ibarrola stand on the highest slag heap in the Ruhr region, the Haniel slag heap. The installation was created in 2002 from over one hundred railroad sleepers. The work combines the "apparent contrasts of industrial space and nature" (statement of the artist). In 2007, the installation, also known as Windkamm, was refurbished and moved. Today, the sleepers stand at the edge of a crescent-shaped hill, which is also the highest point of the slag heap and the windbreak for the mountain arena.

The Haniel slag heap is one of the panoramas on the Route of Industrial Heritage. The installation of the totems is one of the landmarks.
