About the artwork

Icy polar landscapes at the Vlieter monument on the Afsluitdijk. The Vlietermonument is located at the Vlieter, the place where in 1932 the Afsluitdijk was closed. It is a monument in the form of a lookout tower, designed by architect Willem Dudok. The tower was built in 1933.

There is a footbridge over the motorway here and a parking place on either side (Verzorgingsplaats Monument).

In his design for the tower, Dudok took the protective function of the Afsluitdijk against the North Sea as a starting point. Visitors access the tower's balcony via a wide open staircase. From under a wide overhanging roof, visitors can see the full width of the IJsselmeer. He then climbs the spiral staircase in the stairwell. The IJsselmeer remains clearly visible. There are high windows on that side of the stairwell. On the side of the Wadden Sea, the stairwell has no windows. Only at the top of the balcony is the Wadden Sea suddenly visible.

At the entrance of the tower, a bronze relief by artist Hildo Krop has been placed. It shows three stone setters placing basalt blocks and the text: "A people that lives builds on its future."
The watchtower was restored in 2006-2007.
