Sacsayhuaman is a citadel on the northern outskirts of the city of Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. Most of the complex was destroyed in the Spanish conquest of Peru. Archaeologists believe Sacsayhuaman was built by the Killke culture, and expanded by the Inca in the 13th century. One of the most important and mysterious constructions of the ancient world the citadel continues to divide opinion as to how and why it was built.
