Valentine Cameron Prinsep was a very successful British pre-raphaelite artist, and also a playwright and novelist. It is said that this painting was originally entitled 'Salome,' and was to show her carrying the head of John the Baptist, but Prinsep repainted it. Prinsep had great admiration for Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and the model may have been a popular pre-raphaelite painters' model, who was also used by Rossetti, named Fanny Cornforth.
