Poseidon, in Greek mythology, is the god who rules the sea, the waters and their gods. But he was also a god of horses and - as "Earth-Shaker" - of earthquakes. The Roman equivalent is Neptune. He is often depicted with a trident.
By his lawful wife Amphitrite, he had a son and three daughters: Triton, Rhode, Kymopolea and Benthesikyme.
The man, or god, sits on a horse and treks through the sea. Behind him, his wife is carried by men holding shells and she is sitting topless so that the back, torso and a breast are in the portrait.
Rupert Charles Wulsten Bunny (Melbourne, September 29, 1864 - May 25, 1947) was an Australian painter.
Bunny's early work was strongly influenced by the English Pre-Raphaelites, with aestheticist and neoclassical tendencies, with great attention to detail. After 1900 his style became looser, more impressionistic, and he mainly painted portraits and landscapes in a typical fin de siècle atmosphere.
