This photo was taken at Boulders Beach, on South Africa's southern coast, near Simon's Town. The beach is known worldwide for its unusual inhabitants: a colony of African penguins that roam freely here among the granite rocks and clear waters of False Bay.
The African penguin, also known as the "jackass penguin" because of its distinctive call, is the only penguin species that breeds on the African mainland. They once occurred in large numbers along the coasts of South Africa and Namibia, but due to overfishing and habitat loss, their population has declined sharply. The colony at Boulders Beach is therefore carefully protected, offering visitors a rare chance to observe these charming birds up close in their natural habitat.
Pictured are some penguins perched on the rocks just above the waterline. Their shiny black and white plumage contrasts beautifully with the soft hues of stone and sea. The serenity of the moment - the rhythm of the waves, the gentle flutter of wings - captures the special balance between nature and protection that makes Boulders Beach so unique.
