About "Luca, pastel blue and turquoise (1 of 4)"

by Blikstjinder by Betty J

About the artwork

The Lucanus cervus, also called flying deer, is the largest beetle in the Netherlands. It can reach a total length of 9 cm! The beetle is very rare, but namesake Luca was able to make friends with this special insect and was happy to pose to capture this portrait.

This work came about spontaneously by experimenting with the images. Ultimate goal is to create a magical (sur)realistic image, often colourful, where subject and background literally complement each other.

There are also 4 copies of this work, each with its own atmosphere.

This work contains several museum pieces including the image of a 1939 gros point needlework by Ivar Julius. This is also the youngest museum piece. The oldest is the work by Joris Hoefnagel. He put the flying deer on paper. This must have been done between 1542 and 1601. The rose comes from an 1838 painting by P.J Redouté and the collar was painted by or in the studio of Thomas de Keyser around 1625 - 1630. The face is composed partly with a photograph from the 19th century.
