About "John Singer Sargent Street in Venice Painting"

About the artwork

Realistic acrylic painting of John Singer Sargent, Street In Venice, with his portrait, painted by the Dutch fine artist Paul Meijering - the original painting is 90 x 120 cm and part of a permanent collection.

John Singer Sargent (Florence, 12 January 1856 - London, 14 April 1925) was an American painter, best known for his portraits.

Sargent had American parents, but was born in Italy and lived most of his life in Europe. He became particularly known for his portraits (Rodin called him "the Van Dyck of our time"), but towards the end of his life he also devoted himself to painting landscapes. He produced a total of about 900 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours and numerous sketches and charcoal drawings.

Sargent's style is realistic but often coarse, yet clearly showing the characteristics of the person portrayed. Portrait of Madame X at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is considered by some to be his masterpiece. In some other paintings, he experimented with impressionist techniques, as in Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood.
