Jindřich Štyrský's large oil painting From My Diary is among his most essential Surrealist paintings. Although Štyrský experimented with various styles during his career, French Surrealism and his tendency to depict random objects in unexpected contexts had the greatest impact on him. Sigmund Freund's study of psychoanalysis also played an important role, especially the passages on dreams. Štyrský even kept his own dream diary (as evidenced by the title of this painting), which he then used as a source of inspiration. He also worked closely with the painter Toyen.
Jindřich Štyrský (Dolní Čermná, Czech Republic 11 August 1899 - Prague, 21 March 1942) was a Czechoslovak painter, poet, editor, photographer and surrealist draughtsman and creator of modern art.
His work is known for his dreamy and fantastic images, often exploring themes of eroticism, mysticism and the subconscious. Štyrský was one of the founders of the Surrealist Group of Czechoslovakia and worked closely with his artistic partner Toyen (Marie Čermínová)
