About "Historic wall of red clay with weeds."

by Marjolein Zijlstra

About the artwork

Adobe building's clay stucco wall, soft red shade, coarse plaster, smooth and craftily processed as the outer shell of a wall from days gone by. Technique still used in South America, among others, as well as in many African countries, where one has to make use of the simple materials that nature offers man there. Even in southern Europe, including Spain, the atmosphere of clay stucco is still regularly found on old buildings, especially those of Moorish origin.
This atmosphere of clay stucco, with its warm hue and coarse grainy skin, is in stark contrast to the clay stucco often used in the half-timbered houses of South Limburg and neighbouring Germany in the centuries behind us. There, the colour of yellow loam is usually painted white in combination with black oak beams that are the supports of the building, forming the skeleton. You do not come across this form of construction in this way in Adobe.
