About "Gilded Buddha statues, Wat Pho, Bangkok,"

by Walter G. Allgöwer

About the artwork

Amidst the spiritual tranquillity of Wat Pho, one of Bangkok's oldest and most important temples, the gilded Buddha statues stand in radiant splendour. These sublime figures, depicting Buddha Gautama at the moment of his enlightenment, radiate infinite serenity and dignity. Their hands form the bhumispara mudra, the gesture of touching the earth - a symbol of the decisive moment when Buddha invoked the earth as a witness to his enlightenment. The gold that covers their surfaces captures the light of the tropical sun and makes the figures appear almost unearthly. Their luminous, almost celestial contours seem to lead the visitor into a world of deep peace and inner wisdom.
Surrounded by the magnificent architecture of Wat Pho, with its ornate temple roofs and skilfully designed mosaics, the earthly merges with the spiritual. The golden lustre of the Buddha figures not only stands for material gold, but also symbolises enlightenment itself - the overcoming of ignorance and suffering. The silent, meditative faces of Buddha invite the viewer to pause, to sense the present and to reflect on their own search for inner peace. In this timeless stillness, the wisdom of the centuries seems present and the moment of enlightenment comes alive.
