Lucia of Syracuse (according to tradition 283-304) is a Christian martyr venerated as a saint by Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christians. She is the patron saint of the blind. She is the only Catholic saint also venerated by Lutherans in Scandinavia, in celebrations that have retained many pre-Christian elements of a yule feast for the solstice.
Hence, she has two eyes in her hand. The woman's portrait is set against a background of gold.
