What many people do not know is that the red colour of this Flamingo species comes from the fact that they live on algae and small crustaceans. The algae contain carotenoids, natural dyes. They stand jauntily on their high legs, this one looked beautifully cocky in front of it and gave me every chance to take a nice photo.
The ribs near the beak serve as a filter.
These fins at the edge of the beak keep out oversized portions of food. The smaller blades serve as a sieve to keep the smallest food particles inside the beak.
