The evening star is better known as the planet Venus, which is often visible in the night sky at sunset. Venus is also the planet of love and is often depicted in art as a beautiful woman or girl. Evelyn often chose to personify elements such as the Moon, Fog and Stars - not only to strengthen her predominant interest in representing the feminine, but also in the ancient sources of symbolism in which she follows tradition.
This work is a study for a greater whole which unfortunately has not been carried out. At this stage Evelyn had fully developed her characteristic artistic style, which combined her mastery in depicting the female form with a brilliant use of paint and a radiant palette of colours.
Evelyn De Morgan (London, 30 August 1855 - there, 2 May 1919) was an English painter associated with the movement of the Pre-Raphaelites. She studied spiritualism, was an advocate of social reforms such as women's suffrage and was interested in moral issues. She derived her themes from religious and allegorical figures and scenes and strong female figures, often with a message of hope and courage.
