Dutch landscape with windmill
Mills have been used for centuries. The first large mills were the so-called horse mills, where all the heavy work was done by a horse or several horses. By the time of the Middle Ages, water mills were developed, where the heavy work no longer had to be done by a living creature, but by flowing water. In places where there was fast flowing water, these mills were erected, so they were most often placed in the East and South of the Netherlands. Over the years, mills have taken on more and more different functions and have also changed in appearance.
