Clara Gordon Bow (Brooklyn, 29 July 1905 - Los Angeles, 27 September 1965) was an American actress and sex symbol.
Clara was discovered by a man who offered her a screen test in Hollywood. People initially saw no talent in her, but thought otherwise after this test. One of Clara's many talents was that she could cry on command.
In 1927, her most famous film ever was released; It. This film made her a real sex symbol. She had affairs with many men after this, including Béla Lugosi, Gary Cooper, Gilbert Roland, John Wayne, Victor Fleming and John Gilbert.
Soon her affairs, her addiction to alcohol and drugs and her mental lability became a major problem for her studio. Despite the fact that many thought her cheap looks were a disgrace, she was still praised for her polite and cheerful personality and enthusiasm.
Her next film, Wings, received 'the world's first Academy Award for Best Picture.
