They look like a landscape from another planet: the orange and black striped domes of the Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park. This spectacular rock formation in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia is not only geologically unique - it is a marvel of nature. And you can only really appreciate this from the air.

The aerial photo shown here, taken from a helicopter, reveals the full extent of these gigantic sandstone formations. The mighty domes, formed by erosion over millions of years, are reminiscent of oversized beehives - a sight to marvel at. The Aborigines, who have inhabited this region for thousands of years, call this place “Purnululu”, which simply means “sandstone”. The area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003.

This picture is more than just a beautiful photograph - it is a window into Australia's geological past. The contrast between the bright red rock, the vast bushland and the deep blue sky creates an almost hypnotic effect. Things to know about Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle Range):

Location: Purnululu National Park is located in the east of the Kimberley region in Western Australia, about 250 km south of Kununurra.

Access: Access is adventurous - only with an off-road 4WD vehicle over a 53 km long, partly rough track or by helicopter.

Geology: The Bungle Bungle consist of sandstone that is around 350 million years old. The striking stripes are the result of alternating deposits of quartz sand and clay, which store water to varying degrees - creating the typical orange and dark layers.

Name: “Purnululu” simply means “sandstone” in the language of the Kija people. The name “Bungle Bungle” used today is probably the result of a misunderstanding - possibly named after a nearby cattle station.

UNESCO World Heritage Site: The park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003 - as an outstanding example of exceptional erosion forms and cultural significance.
