The purpose of piers and breakwaters is to keep the ebb and flow of the tide off the coast. You can read more about ebb and flow via the heading 'Current'. Due to the ebb and flow of the tide, the water flows with great force along the coast and without the groynes the beach would wear away.
You can see them along our coast at regular intervals since 1843. They were used by Rijkswaterstaat to monitor the development of beaches and dunes. Today, they are no longer needed for this purpose and are gradually disappearing from the beach scene.
