Abkhazia does not exist for everyone. This means it is a de facto state and only partially recognized republic. In 1999 Abkhazia declared itself independent from Georgia. 5 countries in the world (members of the United Nations; Russia, Syria, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru) recognize Abkhazia. All other countries (also members of the United Nations) legally consider Abkhazia a part of Georgia. Abkhazia lies between Georgia and Russia and has a population of approximately 250,000.
